A considerable amount of quality information is available on line on Tree Diseases and Invasive Threats (much of it from the PA DCNR Bureau of Forestry) and we will direct you to it in various articles.
There are a number of ways to approach and categorize the threats to Pennsylvania's trees and forests, and we are taking the following approach:
- Invasive Plant Species - Many non-native plants pose a threat to native species and the diversity and overall health of our forests.
- Insects and Disease Pests - Generally, a balance exists between insects and disease pests and the forests they occupy. Occasionally, however, special circumstances can lead to an imbalance and our trees can suffer. Additionally, introduced species can pose a special threat because many native trees have limited or no natural defenses against them. We provide resources for more information on both types of insect threats.

Rising to the Challenge of Invasive Species
Green is good, right? Unfortunately, it's not that simple. Some exotic species - those that have come to Penn's Woods from other geographic areas - become invasive, meaning that they invade, degrade or otherwise disrupt the long-occurring balance of an indigenous natural situation. Many unique challenges are presented by these alien invaders.
The prevailing perception that all green is good is the first challenge. Widespread education on the issue is desperately needed. The good news is that anyone can help spread the word, not the weed.
