We are providing an outline of good basic information and helpful web links. However, as with most of our new features, we would be glad to consider any articles or essays you might be willing to contribute, as well as links to other quality websites.
The following information and guidelines are for those who would like to approach their tree planting with the best information available. However, before recommending specific resources, we would like to suggest the following for those who would rather avoid the relatively small amount of homework that it takes to learn all of the basics:
- Purchase your trees from a local reputable nursery
- Follow the recommendations on the tag that are now included on most trees and shrubs.
- If the tag is not available, speak with someone working at the nursery to make sure that the tree is right for you
- Pay particular attention to the tree's need for light; try to determine if your site is right for that tree.
- Plant your tree according to the included or described recommendations.
- Water according to directions.
Publications:
For anyone interested in reading an excellent online guide, we recommend the Penn State University Publication from their Forest Stewardship series entitled Backyard Trees. You can access it online by following the link with its title, or for ordering information visit How to Order College of Ag Sciences Publications. You will discover 16 pages of well organized material covering all of the basics of site evaluation, species selection, proper planting techniques, and much more.
