The following information and guidelines are for those who would like to approach their tree planting with the best information available. However, before recommending specific resources, we would like to suggest the following for those who would rather avoid the relatively small amount of homework that it takes to learn all of the basics:

1. Purchase your trees from a local reputable nursery
2. Follow the recommendations on the tag that are now included on most trees and shrubs.
3. If the tag is not available, speak with someone working at the nursery to make sure that the tree is right for you
4. Pay particular attention to the tree's need for light; try to determine if your site is right for that tree.
5. Plant your tree according to the included or described recommendations.
6. Water according to directions.
