North Trailhead: Black Cherry

Panorama offering a look into a mixed species Pennsylvania woodlot in late February.

Yesterday, I posted North Trailhead: Serviceberry, the first tree encountered in my A Forest Study: North Trailhead

I am continuing to examine the picture to identify interesting plants and trees, working from right to left.

Dead black cherry, perhaps demonstrating the species shade intolerance.

Pictured here is a black cherry with a dead sprout projecting up to the left. Although I can’t say for certain what led to this tree’s demise, black cherries are one of the least shade-tolerant trees in our forests. I’m guessing it simply picked a bad spot to sprout and was shaded out.
