North Trailhead: Serviceberry

Panorama offering a look into a mixed species Pennsylvania woodlot in late February.

I’m starting with a little bit of a stretch as I work through the trailhead panorama from A Forest Study: North Trailhead.

I’m working right to left in the picture, and the first item encountered is the serviceberry (Juneberry). It’s a bit of a stretch, because it’s not clear in this shot. If you look closely, you should be able to spot the characteristic vertical grooves on the one visible trunk.

Here is how the three trunks look in an unobstructed view. Multiple trunks, like the grooves, are characteristic of the species.
